According to him, the only relatively safe option is a one-time top-up, when 5W-30 and 5W-40 oils are mixed. However, this is only true if strict conditions are met: both products must be of the same brand, belong to the same line and have a verified origin.

“The main condition is that after such an ‘emergency’ top-up, at the first opportunity, perform a full oil and filter change, returning to the product recommended by the car manufacturer,” expert Artem Chaltsev said in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

A completely different situation arises when a car owner mixes products from different manufacturers or even different lines within one brand. As the expert explained, in this case it is impossible to be sure of the compatibility of viscosity modifiers and additive packages.

Differences in chemical composition create serious risks: the formation of sediment, disruption of the stability of the oil film, and even direct chemical conflict between additives are possible.

The consequences of such an experiment can be disastrous. Engine wear protection suffers, the cleaning ability of the oil deteriorates, the friction coefficient changes, and the behavior of the lubricant at high and low temperatures becomes unpredictable.

The specialist emphasizes that an attempt to save money by using the oil that is at hand easily results in premature, expensive engine repairs, which will many times cover any immediate benefit.

Earlier it was reported that Daimler will present an electric bus, which has a power reserve 2.5 times greater than that of KamAZ.
