AvtoVAZ will not produce cars in Ethiopia

At least for now: agreements with the authorities or assembly enterprises of Ethiopia have not been reached. This was reported by the QTO portal with reference to the press service of the Russian Automobile Plant. However, they emphasized that AvtoVAZ does not completely refuse this idea and is still interested in the African market.

“AvtoVAZ is interested in the African market, but it’s too early to talk about any specific agreements,” the producer’s press service said.

Earlier, the Ethiopian Ambassador Genet Teshome Jirru said that AvtoVAZ will establish electric cars in the country by the end of 2025. He again recalled that Lada is popular with local residents, and therefore AvtoVAZ will not have to invest in advertising.

For several years, Russian automakers have been called to invest in Ethiopia. In 2021, the probability of export and assembly in the African country was allowed by the head of AvtoVAZ Maxim Sokolov, and two years later an agreement on production with the local company Ethio Engineering Group was concluded. However, things did not go further. AvtoVAZ considered the possibility of export from Ethiopia to other countries of the region – Sudan, Kenya and Somalia.

An agreement with the Africans was concluded by another Russian manufacturer – UAZ. This happened back in 2021, but, as in the case of AvtoVAZ, there is still no certainty. Representatives of the Ulyanovsk Plant said they were studying the possibility of entering the Ethiopia market, but “to talk about specifics for a few prematurely.”
