In winter, at sub-zero temperatures, the gas tank cap, hood or trunk of a car can freeze; Za Rulem magazine expert Mikhail Kolodochkin told Motor how to deal with this.
“To prevent any rubber seals from freezing, they must be treated in advance with some kind of silicone-containing liquid or auto chemicals. If you don’t have enough money for this, you can use, roughly speaking, a sponge to clean shoes: it’s the same silicone,” Kolodochkin said.
According to him, if a car door is frozen, you need to lean on it with all your strength, as if trying to push it inside. In this case, it will move a little, which may be enough. Also, you should not pull the frozen roof of the trunk or gas tank, but you need to press on it from above and try to “stir” it. If you still can’t open the hood or trunk, the auto expert advised you to come to the nearest warm parking lot and wait 10-15 minutes until everything thaws.
