The technology running in motorsport is ready to launch mass production, and such composites will use both for external body kit and the elements of the internal decor. New materials in structure, lightness and stiffness are similar to carbon fiber, but at the same time more environmentally friendly.
Composits based on natural fibers, which are now mainly used in motorsport, can soon appear on civilian cars. BMW wants to become a pioneer in this area. In partnership with the Swiss BCOMP, the Germans have been making elements of a body kit from a natural composite for several years, which includes flax fibers, and the last tests show that this material meets even strict requirements for the rigidity of the roof.

Natural composites are equally well suited for the manufacture of visible parts of the body and salon, plus they significantly reduce Co₂e emissions. According to BMW estimates, replacing the carbon fiber roof with the “natural” will save about 40% of the issue only at the production stage – and this is without recycling and re -use.

The BMW M Motorsport branch has been experimenting with natural composites for more than five years. At first they were used in Formula E, then in the BMW M4 DTM and M4 GT4 instead of plastic carbon fiber reinforced with carbon fiber. Another stress test for promising materials will be held very soon, within the framework of the daily race “24 hours of nürburgring”.
