A 219-meter transporter called “Shenzhen” set sail from the port of Yangzhou: the auto giant gave the name in honor of the city with its headquarters. The new ro-ro carrier is capable of speeds of up to 18.5 knots (34 km/h) and simultaneously transports up to 9,200 vehicles. The BYD car carrier ship causes minimal harm to the environment thanks to its dual-fuel engines and energy-saving devices.
The power plant runs on liquefied natural gas (propane) or traditional marine fuel (mazut). For optimal energy consumption, BYD Box stationary batteries are installed. The electric Shenzhen will likely be able to operate in parking lots or low-emission areas to reduce fuel consumption. Details about the hybrid system are not provided.

Chinese BYD is actively expanding its fleet for car exports. In January 2024, the auto giant got its first roll-on cruiser called Explorer, then Changzhou, Hefei, and now Shenzhen were launched. The fleet of car carrier ships is planned to be increased to eight units by the beginning of 2026, which will allow BYD not to depend on third-party carriers.
In just a few years, China has become the largest exporter of cars in the world, and sea vessels for transporting cars are in short supply. Previously, local shipyards assembled four car carriers a year, but now production capacity had to be increased tenfold.
