On January 1, 2025, a law on mandatory genomic registration for drivers who have committed serious violations will come into force in Russia. The new measure is aimed at strengthening control over offenders and will also apply to persons subject to administrative arrest.
In Russia, from January 1, 2025, a law will come into force that requires mandatory genomic registration for traffic rule violators. Such violations include leaving the scene of an accident and driving while intoxicated without a driver’s license. The DNA data of such drivers will be entered into law enforcement databases.

The law also covers persons subject to administrative arrest under articles of the Code of Administrative Offences. Previously, mandatory genomic registration applied only to those who were convicted of serious and especially serious crimes. The new measure expands the circle of people required to submit their genetic data, which, according to legislators, should increase the level of safety on the roads.
Earlier it became known that Russia plans to tighten the procedure for obtaining medical certificates for drivers. The Ministry of Health has proposed introducing mandatory drug testing when obtaining a driver’s license. This is due to the fact that today there is a practice of purchasing medical certificates without undergoing tests. This loophole is often used by motorists whose licenses have been revoked for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
