In Italy, car production will fall to 1958 levels

According to the FIM-CISL trade union, by the end of 2024, less than half a million cars will be assembled in the country: the collapse compared to 2023 will be up to 33%. In Italy, only 4% of sales come from cars without internal combustion engines, and the FIAT 500e struggled to find 2,000 buyers in ten months. Until November 2025, the situation is unlikely to change: only by this time will the Mirafiori plant organize the production of the hybrid FIAT 500. Not all employees of the enterprise can wait for re-equipment, because now their financial well-being rests on benefits. Stellantis estimates that it is 40% more expensive to produce electric vehicles in Europe than models with internal combustion engines.

It is curious that the Italian government’s targets ignore the market situation: by the end of the decade, the country should produce one million cars and light commercial vans.
