According to Autostat, at the end of November, the volume of the secondary car market reached 524.5 thousand units, which is 14.5 percent more than in the same month of 2023. If we consider the period from January to November 2024, then Russians bought more than 5.5 million used cars. This is 4.6 percent higher than the figure for 11 months of last year.
The agency notes that in November, more than half of the secondary market traditionally accounted for five brands. Lada remains in first place in terms of sales: every fourth car resold in November was of a domestic brand. Lada’s share in the total volume reached almost 26 percent.
A tenth of the market is occupied by Toyota, which has not officially sold new cars in Russia for several years, but is still popular in the secondary market. The top five also includes Kia with a share of 5.5 percent, Hyundai (5.3 percent) and Nissan (4.5 percent). Five more brands – Volkswagen, Chevrolet, Renault, Honda and Ford – had a market share of three to four percent at the end of November, while for the remaining brands it did not exceed three percent.
A new leader has appeared in the ranking of Russians’ favorite foreign cars. Sales have gone down again: the car market has shrunk by 17 percent. The Russian car market: failure or hope?
And if in the secondary market everything is more or less stable, then in the new car market there have been dramatic changes over the past few years. Moreover, the structure itself has changed: if in 2020 a share of 75 percent was held by global brands – Japanese (Toyota and others), Korean (Hyundai and Kia) and European (Renault, Volkswagen and others), then by the end of 2024 their share decreased to 10 percent. This is due to the cessation of supplies and production. But the “Chinese” now own 59 percent of the market, another 31 percent belongs to domestic brands.
In the last year, the number of cars imported into Russia through parallel imports has been decreasing: if in 2022-2023 they accounted for 35-37 percent, then in 2024 alternative supplies were “strangled” by recycling collection. At the same time, imports generally picked up, but supply volumes grew only until October.
