Russians have become unaccustomed to affordable prices for cars, but in Japan, meanwhile, you can buy a real Subaru WRX STI Sport# sports car for the price of a cheap Chinese SUV. Moreover, this special version is a rare version even for the domestic Japanese market – it has a manual transmission and all-wheel drive with self-locking.
The main feature of the model, first shown at the Tokyo Motor Show, is a six-speed manual transmission, which is not offered on regular Japanese versions of the WRX. The new product is positioned as an STI “complimentary car”, that is, a production car, but already modified by the engineers of the tuning division of Subaru Tecnica International.
Under the hood, the familiar 2.4-liter FA24 boxer turbo engine with 275 hp remains. with a torque of 350 Nm. However, the main changes affected the chassis: the car received active shock absorbers with settings from STI, performance Brembo brakes with 18-inch perforated “pancakes”. The sedan has 19-inch alloy wheels with Bridgestone Potenza S007 tires measuring 245/35R19. All-wheel drive with center differential and viscous coupling is complemented by STI anti-roll bars.
The appearance of the new product is revealed by red inserts in the bumpers, a black spoiler and STI nameplates. The interior features Recaro sports seats upholstered in black Alcantara with yellow perforations and the STI logo, as well as leather covers on the gearshift knob and handbrake lever. The price of the new product has not yet been announced, but the STI Sport# modification will cost more than the regular WRX with a CVT (from 4.5 million yen) and the STI Sport R EX version (5 million yen), approximately 5.3 million yen, which at the current exchange rate is approximately 2.6 million rubles.
Thus, the WRX STI Sport# is not just a version with “mechanics” and nameplates, but a kind of step towards returning the spirit of the legendary sports Subaru, focused on close contact with the driver and handling. This car is for Japanese enthusiasts who yearn for the days when the combination of boxer, four-wheel drive and manual transmission sounded like dogma.
Before this, we invited readers to recall the history of Mazda’s unique engines, due to the fact that it discontinued production of the last “rotary” model.
