Tesla against the EU: Mark filed a lawsuit due to duties for electric cars from China

The case against the European Commission will be considered in the European Court of General Jurisdiction and can stretch for six months, reports Financial Times. The reason for the Tesla citizen, were duties on the import of electric vehicles of the Chinese assembly in the amount of up to 35.3 percent. For the American brand, the rate was reduced to 7.8 percent – during an additional examination, it was established that the company received the least support from the Chinese authorities.

INVITUAL DUENTS ON THE Chinese electric cars began to operate in the EU countries in October 2024. The size of the rate depends on the degree of participation of the PRC government in the activities of a car manufacturer: Tesla, as receiving the least support from the Chinese government, pays 7.8 percent, and the SAIS concern – the maximum 35.3 percent. Moreover, the increased fee is plused to the current rate of 10 percent.

The reason for the introduction of an increased fee was an investigation conducted by the EU, which showed that the chain of creating the cost of BEV in China “benefits from unjust subsidies”, which poses a threat to economic damage to European manufacturers of electric vehicles. In other words, the European Union thus achieves “honest competition”, which was previously stated by the chairman of the international trade committee of the European Parliament Bernd Lange.

According to statistics, about a fifth of all electric vehicles – about 300 thousand pieces – sold in the European Union in 2024, was produced in China.

China challenged barriers to electric cars in the European Union through the World Trade Organization. European car manufacturers are also opposed to the trade war with China, including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen AG and Volvo.

A number of companies filed lawsuits in the European Court – including the German Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, Chinese auto manufacturers by Co., Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd. And Saic Motor Corp., and now the American Tesla.
