Sales of cars in the northern capital are reduced, but the density of traffic continues to grow. With 10-point traffic jams, they are fighting the development of public transport, but a radical measure is also being discussed-to introduce a fee for entry to the city center. The speaker of the Legislative Assembly Alexander Belsky expressed this idea, and they can make a decision for five years, writes Business Petersburg.
According to Belsky, now the authorities at the federal level are discussing the launch of an experiment with a paid entrance to the center of cities. This decision would be useful to St. Petersburg, he said, noting that the city “in its structure of the city is very similar to Stockholm.” In the Swedish capital, this practice has already been applied. 70 percent of the population was initially against, but after the introduction of the fee, public opinion changed – 90 percent spoke in.
“Petersburg is still an open-air museum, we must understand, see, preserve this, provide the opportunity for guests of the city that come to us, admire our city, and not the number of cars in traffic jams,” Belsky said.
In Russia, the rules for passing vehicles with special systems of electric scooters have changed about the maximum age of cars in Russia again in Russia.
Now there are 329 cars for a thousand inhabitants of St. Petersburg, calculated in Avtostat. This is more than in Moscow – 301 cars per thousand citizens. Despite the “systematic work” on the development of urban transport, traffic jams at the peak reaches 10 points, which forces the authorities to look for new ways to unload the roads.
The idea of a paid center is far from the first time. Back in 2022, it was expressed by the same Alexander Belsky, and in 2019 a project was developed for a comprehensive scheme for organizing traffic with the possibility of levying travel on central streets and bridges.
