The main factor that restrains the growth of the number of electric vehicles in Russia is still considered an undeveloped network of charging stations. According to NIU HSE, Moscow remains the leader in their number, but in terms of security, the first place near Nizhny Novgorod, where there are 11.23 electric cars for one terminal (14.41 in the capital). Further development of the market requires serious support measures – from localization of production to the introduction of a flexible tariff policy for electricity.
According to the results of 2024, 59.6 thousand electric vehicles were registered in Russia – in nine years, their number increased by 225 percent. According to experts, in 2024, the growth of sales in the electric vehicle was mainly provided by Chinese manufacturers and the Moscow Motor Automobile Plant Moskvich. At the same time, the volume of imports of both new and used electric vehicles from 2022 to 2023 decreased by 34 and 22 percent, respectively.
Electric cars remain the transport of predominantly large cities and agglomerations, in which there are measures to support it and investments are carried out in the expansion of charging infrastructure. According to calculations, the total cost of owning an electric car may be lower than usual, but in practice, a lot depends on the operating conditions, the speed of the degradation of batteries and the presence/parameters of state support. For example, for commercial companies, the costs of introducing electric vehicles are still significant.
