Instead of a new domestic car costing 1 million rubles, you can find real people’s “sports cars” on the secondary market, with all the assumptions, of course. But these will be cars with vigorous acceleration dynamics, sharp handling and striking appearance. The editors of Motor magazine have compiled a list of the five most worthy contenders for the title of “million dollar lighter.”

We tried to make the selection not entirely standard: many people know about the existence of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, Ford Focus ST or Subaru Impreza WRX STi, but the turbocharged Mitsubishi Outlander, powerful Renault Clio RS or the “basic” Subaru Impreza WRX – these cars are much less known. But these are the cars that can be found on the secondary market in good condition and at an adequate price.

Mitsubishi Outlander Turbo (2002−2009): from 950 thousand rubles

The first generation of the Mitsubishi Outlander crossover has a turbo version, for which the famous Lancer Evolution shared the transmission and engine. To find this particular option on electronic bulletin boards, you need to specify the power “over 200 hp,” since the two-liter turbo-four produces 202 hp.

Fans of honest all-wheel drive should appreciate the classic all-wheel drive system with a differential between the axles, complemented by a viscous coupling. However, for city use, the obvious disadvantage would be a manual transmission – this version was not equipped with an automatic transmission at all.

Subaru Impreza WRX (2007−2014 model year): from 850 thousand rubles

Most ordinary people know that Subaru produced the uncompromising WRX STi, which could go to rally races without any preparation (only a roll cage was required from additional equipment). So, WRX is, in everyday language, the younger sister of “poems”.

In any case, even the WRX offers many interesting improvements over the standard Impreza. Thus, the boxer engine develops 235, and since 2010 – 260 forces. Plus, pleasant bonuses will be a self-locking center differential, a radically redesigned suspension and powerful brakes.

Ford Kuga

Ford Kuga (2008−2013): from 800 thousand rubles

Ford Kuga at first seems superfluous: how can a family crossover be sporty? Meanwhile, maybe. It has a 202 hp version, under the hood of which there is a five-cylinder Volvo 2.5 turbo engine – the same one that was installed on the Ford Focus ST hot hatch.

The all-wheel drive system uses a fourth-generation Haldex clutch, so the Kuga can slide sideways quite well. But the suspension is a bit soft, which is understandable: all modifications have the same chassis settings. However, even calm suspension settings do not change the important fact: acceleration to 100 km/h takes 8.2 seconds.

Renault Clio RS
Renault

Renault Clio RS (2006−2012): from 700 thousand rubles

The third generation Renault Clio RS hatchback is also in our budget. There are few such cars for sale, but they exist. Basic versions are equipped with a 200-horsepower 1.6 turbo engine and a six-speed preselective “robot”, while some copies are equipped with a custom Cup suspension – it is stiffer than the standard one.

The Trophy version is distinguished by an engine with an output of 220 hp, an even more clamped suspension and a reduced ground clearance. However, such a hatchback will be only slightly faster than the basic “Ereski”: acceleration to 100 km/h takes 6.6 instead of 6.7 seconds, and the top speed is 235 versus 230 km/h.

Skoda Fabia RS
Skoda

Skoda Fabia RS (2010−2014): from 900 thousand rubles

The engine of the “hot” Skoda Fabia has only 1.4 liters of displacement, but thanks to a mechanical and turbocharged supercharger it develops 180 hp. The 7-speed preselective gearbox has been reconfigured for dynamic driving, the brakes have been strengthened, and the stabilization system has been trained to simulate differential locking; the drive is only front-wheel drive.

Skoda promotes the Simply Clever marketing philosophy, which means that everyday use of even a sports car should be as comfortable as possible. Therefore, the “hot” hatchback pleases with pleasant little things: there are glove compartments under the front seat cushions, and a rigid trunk shelf can be installed at the desired height.

Thus, even with a budget of 1 million rubles, you can find on the secondary market a car with character and power of over 200 hp. The main thing is to carefully check the technical condition and service history of the selected instance. Which of these “lighters” do you like best?
