The list, compiled by Topspeed, includes models produced between 1964 and 1971, considered the golden era of muscle cars. In the mid-1960s, the Detroit auto industry introduced the world to a new level of performance. Muscle cars were designed to be affordable, simple and amazingly fast on a straight road, which was ideal for post-war America with its developed road infrastructure and drag racing culture.
The 1964 Pontiac GTO Tri-Power is recognized as the leader of the rating. This model is considered the founder of the genre. The GTO was introduced as an optional package on the Tempest, circumventing General Motors’ corporate ban on installing large engines in midsize cars. Under the hood was a 6.4-liter V8 with three two-barrel carburetors that produced 348 horsepower. Acceleration to 60 mph (96 km/h) took 5.7 seconds, and the car completed the quarter mile in 14.1 seconds.
Silver goes to the 1968 Dodge Charger R/T 426 Hemi. Model with hidden headlights and a 7.0-liter Hemi engine producing 425 hp. became a true icon of street racing in the late 1960s. Acceleration to 60 mph took just 5.1 seconds, and the top speed reached 140 mph (225 km/h).
Rounding out the top three is the 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 LS6. This model was the pinnacle of the muscle car era. When GM lifted engine size restrictions, Chevrolet installed a 450-hp 7.4-liter V8 under the Chevelle’s hood. The model ran the quarter mile in 13.1 seconds and accelerated to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds.
Fourth place goes to the 1970 Plymouth Hemi ‘Cuda. This car with its characteristic “shaker” air intake and bright body colors is considered one of the main symbols of the era. The 7.0-liter Hemi V8 produced 425 hp. Today, rare convertibles of this model fetch over a million dollars at auction.
Fifth place goes to the 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429. The car was built for homologation in NASCAR racing. The 7.0-liter engine was so wide that the body had to be modified to accommodate it. Official power was 375 hp, with a 0-60 mph time of 5.3 seconds.
Rounding out the top six was the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona. This is a true aerodynamic monster with a 23-inch wing and a pointed nose. It became the first car in NASCAR history to break 200 mph (322 km/h). In the version with the Hemi engine it developed 425 hp.
In seventh position is the 1970 Buick GSX Stage 1. This car long held the record for torque among American production cars – 510 lb-ft (691 Nm). The 7.5-liter V8 produced 360 hp. and accelerated to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds.
Eighth on the list is the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro COPO ZL1, one of the rarest muscle cars (only 69 examples). Featuring an aluminum block engine, the ZL1 produces 430 hp. the car turned out to be incredibly light and fast. The cost of a new model in 1969 reached $7,300, which was an astronomical amount.
The ninth line is occupied by the 1970 Oldsmobile 442 W-30 Holiday Coupe – the embodiment of luxury and power. The 7.4-liter V8 with three carburetors produced 365 hp.
Rounding out the top ten is the 1971 Plymouth Road Runner. The unique design and available Hemi V8 made this model a legend. With a 426 Hemi engine producing 425 hp. the car covered the quarter mile in 13.7 seconds.
As TopSpeed experts note, the golden era of muscle cars did not last long – by 1971, stricter environmental regulations and the fuel crisis led to a decrease in engine power. However, it was during these years that cars were created that forever changed the idea of speed and style.
