By the appearance of the spark plugs, you can determine several hidden problems with the engine. Sergey Pletnev, director of after-sales services at Avtodom Group of Companies, told Gazeta.Ru about this.

According to the expert, black dry soot indicates an over-enriched fuel mixture. The cause may lie in a faulty fuel system, such as leaking injectors. In addition, incorrect readings from the mass air flow (MAF) and oxygen sensors lead to such deposits.

If the spark plugs are covered with a black oily coating, this is a sure sign that oil has entered the combustion chamber. As Pletnev explained, there are possible options here: wear of the cylinder-piston group (CPG), valve stem seals, problems with crankcase ventilation, or too high an oil level. On turbocharged engines, the cause may be problems with the supercharger. At the same time, the localization of deposits will tell you exactly where the problem is: if there is deposits on one side of the spark plug, the valves or guides are worn out, but if around the electrode, the CPG is suffering.

A reddish tint on the electrode indicates low quality fuel, which contains compounds of iron, manganese or lead. This coating appears due to chemical additives added to gasoline to improve its characteristics. As a result, the spark becomes weaker and the engine begins to run unstably.

A thick gray-white coating on candles, according to an expert, has two main reasons. This is either ash deposits from additives in the fuel or oil, or overheating of the spark plug itself, which occurs due to the mixture being too lean or the engine heating up too much.

Additionally, Pletnev noted that if the deposit is accompanied by growths on the electrode, this most likely indicates that coolant has entered the combustion chamber.

It was previously reported that Belgee will release a simplified version of the X50 crossover.
