A new Russian engine for passenger cars will be shown in Yekaterinburg

As part of the Innoprom exhibition, the premiere of a turbocharged 4-cylinder internal combustion engine with a capacity of 299 hp, developed by engineers from the NAMI Institute, will take place. The NAMI-414320 unit has a working volume of 2.2 liters and is a “half” V8, which is equipped with Aurus cars.

Following the example of the older 8-cylinder unit, the younger inline four will receive a closed cooling jacket, which will ensure maximum rigidity of the cylinder block and better sealing of the gas joint, reports the Innoprom press service.

NAMI-44320 was first announced by the then head of FSUE NAMI, Maxim Nagaitsev, in the fall of 2014. As Nagaitsev noted, these engines are intended for the promising line of UAZ SUVs, but their installation is also supposedly possible on VAZ and GAZ models.

It is now being clarified that the new engine can be used in passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. However, at the moment the Sollers group, which includes the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant, has its own engines – gasoline ZMZ and diesel Sollers.

UMZ gasoline engines, as well as new G-series diesel engines produced in Nizhny Novgorod, are now installed in GAZ brand vehicles, that is, Gazelle and Sobol. A 300-horsepower NAMI will be overpowering and too expensive for these cars.

For Lada cars, the promising “four” is not compact enough. Thus, it remains unclear for which Russian car the new gasoline product could be useful. Reengineering Chinese cars for a new engine is not economically feasible.
