A rare Lada Tarzan was photographed in Moscow

The uniqueness of this particular version of the car is the French Peugeot diesel engine with a power of 74 hp. Such engines are not often found on such SUVs.

Lada Tarzan is a hybrid: the body from the front-wheel drive VAZ-2108 or VAZ-2109 models is installed on an all-wheel drive chassis from the Niva. This engineering solution provided the car with the comfort of a passenger hatchback and real off-road capabilities: permanent all-wheel drive, a low-range transmission and a ground clearance of 220 mm.

AvtoVAZ, the DECON engineering bureau and the Lada-Consul company worked on the project. Production of “Tarzans” lasted from 1997 to 2003. According to various estimates, just over 2,500 copies were produced, so every surviving car is considered a rarity.

Under the hood, a 1.7-liter gasoline engine from the Niva with an output of 80 hp was most often installed. A distinctive feature of the interior is three control levers: for the gearbox and for the transfer case.
