Auto expert Zinoviev criticized the Chevrolet Malibu for its capricious turbo engine

A five-meter sedan, which can be found on the Russian secondary market at a price of 1.2 million rubles (like the new Kia Rio), has a number of serious shortcomings that can turn saving into a headache. The magazine “Behind the Wheel” spoke about them.

The main disadvantage is the capricious 1.5 turbo engine (160-169 hp). The engine is extremely sensitive to the quality of fuel and oil: one unsuccessful refueling is enough to cause detonation, destruction of pistons or partitions, said Za Rulem expert Sergei Zinoviev. Mileage does not matter in this case.

The second disadvantage is problems with boxes. The early 6-speed hydraulic automatic 6T45 is unreliable and may require intervention up to 150 thousand kilometers, and the post-styling GM VT40 variator has been poorly studied – it has a weak oil pump and pressure regulator.

The third disadvantage is the shortage and high cost of spare parts. Many parts are not easy to find and are expensive.

The fourth is insufficient sound insulation, which looks strange for a business class car.

Fifth – the quality of the interior: “eco-leather” wears out quickly, the plastic is hard in some places.

The optimal choice is a version with a 1.5 engine and an old hydraulic automatic transmission (not a CVT) or with a 2.0 engine and an 8-speed Aisin gearbox.
