A lot of money for your car – who hasn’t tried to make the perfect product according to this recipe. Skoda did great, Kia and Hyundai did very well. Chinese manufacturers have even adopted this formula as a motto. And then they grew out of it. And so, the large but not very expensive Bestune T90 tries to return to reasonable simplicity.
The T90 is a fairly large car: its length is comparable to the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro. At the same time, its wheelbase is 6 centimeters longer. In the context of cars, for the driver this means greater stability on a straight line, but in the real world of a summer house, school, or car, this is primarily an increase in interior space. Usually – due to the trunk. But the T90 also has the luggage compartment you need: 560 liters under the curtain.
He immediately, in the language of centimeters and liters, says: I can be one car in the family. I’m enough for everything. And you have enough for me. After all, prices start from 2,779,990 rubles. And if you apply all the promotions and discounts and agree to a car produced in 2024, you can get it for 2,129,990 rubles. And here, without preamble, I would like to ask: what’s the catch? This is what we tried to find out during the Bestune T90 road test. And here it is, a list of these pitfalls.
Bestune
It has a conservative design. Complex stamped curves seem to have come from the late 2000s. Well, or from those times when Chinese manufacturers had already bought expensive stamping equipment and stopped copying European models, but had not yet begun to set the tone in automotive design. And now, let’s face it, this is already happening.
So the appearance of the T90 can inadvertently deceive: in fact, this is a fresh model, and not brought to the market from stock.
Something in the interior reminds of its low price. However, Bestune T90 diligently tries to hide the savings. Some people will be struck by the thick screen frames (if you moved from Toyota, you won’t notice them, but after the Jaecoo J7 you won’t be impressed) and the general absence of any memorable solutions in the interior. But the designers were not going to give up so easily. The combination of dark cherry color with beige makes the interior made of inexpensive materials richer and more comfortable. Skin-colored plastic is a great idea.
The basic equipment is relatively modest. The Bestune T90 does not have wireless charging, seat lumbar adjustment, windshield and rear seat heating, or lighting in the sun visors and glove compartment.
Question: why save on all this? Probably in order to include equipment that is more impressive to buyers. For example, projection of data onto the windshield. Yes, all T90s have it! As does the panoramic roof. And a surround view system with a “transparent chassis” function on a 12.6-inch display.
Another sign of savings, though not on the client, but for the client: only one version out of five has 19-inch wheels. All others have 18 inches and high-profile 60% tires. This means that “twenties” with a profile of 50, which is quite comfortable for a crossover, will fit into the same arches of a completely calm one. For such silence in the top version and beautiful pictures in booklets, owners could pay with more expensive tires and high costs for tire fitting. But T90 still keeps within the semantic framework of reasonable sufficiency.
The Bestune T90 comes only with front-wheel drive. Once upon a time, a station wagon was considered a family car. And today, a large front-wheel drive crossover is the same station wagon, only more prestigious, with higher ground clearance and thick tires. That is, a much more functional car. But we still admit: if there is a choice of engines and transmissions, we would like all-wheel drive, albeit as an option.
Version 1.5 is frankly slow. The 1.5-liter turbo engine develops 160 horsepower and allows it to accelerate to 100 km/h in 9.3 seconds. But this is according to factory data. In real life, go get that kind of dynamics from the T90. However, it’s just not worth pressing the pedal: the 7-speed robot with two clutches does not like this kind of treatment. These transmissions have other advantages: efficiency is higher than that of an automatic or CVT, which means lower consumption.
We had the opportunity to drive most of the route in a two-liter car with an 8-speed Aisin automatic and, of course, fully equipped. Perhaps, in the context of the market, these are two different cars altogether. We will explain this in the next paragraph.
Version 2.0 is significantly more expensive. The two-liter Bestune T90 2025 in the most complete configuration will cost RUR 3,719,990. The difference is huge! Having assessed the dynamics of the 245-horsepower version, we note: this is still a very profitable offer. Especially now, when there are significant discounts. A large, dynamic and packed to the brim car for 2.9 million? Why not! The one and a half liter modification is now perceived as nothing more than an option “I just need to bring my belongings for the dacha – slowly, but a lot.” And it’s good that she exists.
This is not the standard driver’s car. Journalists have a special characteristic for suspension: “sane.” Typically this includes both handling and ride quality. It means something like this: if you exclude the driver’s pleasure from the reckless behavior of the car from the equation, then everything else will do. The usual scheme with McPherson struts at the front and a multi-link at the rear does not promise any miracles. And there are none: the ride is moderately hard, without overt tremor on small bumps or rocking on asphalt waves.
There are settings for both the power unit and the steering wheel. In the first case, everything is predictable: the sport mode makes the transmission shift down more willingly, hold the gear longer, and also enlivens the response to the gas. In the second, alas, there are also no surprises: the electric power steering makes the steering “lighter” or “heavier”, but not more transparent or more accurate. In this sense, the Bestune T90 is not much different from any other randomly selected crossover.
And, like many other “Chinese” cars, it starts abruptly from a place in the first second and responds just as sharply to a smooth application of the brake. Perhaps this is an already established national Chinese school. The two-liter T90 at least justifies these harsh manners with its dynamics. It is at least sufficient even for a loaded car. The T90 quickly picks up cruising speed, does not bother you with unnecessary noise and allows you to confidently overtake.
That’s it, the tricks are over. A lot of cars are never completely free. But FAW engineers succeeded in focusing on quantity without missing out on the most important aspects. It does not have all-wheel drive, expensive finishing materials and some of the equipment that competitors have. And he, of course, will not become your partner for a typical sunday drive – he doesn’t look like a character. But that’s all. Of course, there will be some other minor flaws. For example, on the test unit, the automatic parking brake had to be turned off with a button after the selector had been moved to D (and for some reason it has an Autohold mode). Small Russification errors popped up somewhere (rarely), but nothing significant could be added to the list above.
A large car always looks respectable. Like the good-natured giant Geely Okavango on the streets of Moscow, like the Bestune T90 in the parking lot of the country-famous luxury hotel “Rybzavod” in the Volga delta. He’s not a stranger here. And if the T90 test had taken place not in the steppes of the Astrakhan region, but somewhere in spoiled cities with a population of over a million, the perception would hardly have changed. Perhaps the design of the crossover, which is slightly behind fashion, allows it not to raise high expectations. After all, when you have to evaluate a car that is inexpensive for its size, you have to weigh the degree of compromise between the engineer, technologist and accountant. It’s bad when you can’t forget about this compromise. It’s good when it’s not too noticeable.
And if there is no underlying deficiency in the Bestune T90, then the car is likely a success. It doesn’t have any “wow”, but the creators tried to give the owner some nice little things. For example, a quick access section in the menu, which the driver can fill with icons at will. Or a customizable star button on the steering wheel. Its function can be selected, be it turning on the heated steering wheel or all-round cameras.

Perhaps the Bestune T90 is not suitable for young people and those who want to relay a certain image through the car. This crossover is more for a family that doesn’t sit still. Cottage or travel is not so important. This is the choice of those for whom space in the back row is more important than the number and type of USB outlets. /m
