Completion of the era: After 24 years, Volkswagen has been withdrawing Touareg from production

After almost a quarter of a century on the conveyor, Volkswagen is preparing for the final cessation of the production of its large Touareg crossover. The car, first represented in 2002, will not receive a direct successor.

The role of the flagship SUV in the Volkswagen line will go to the Tayron model. This decision is dictated by the general strategy of the concern, which now relies on more mass cars.

The story of Touareg began with an ambitious task to bring Volkswagen to a premium segment. Interestingly, the crossover was created in close cooperation with Porsche – it shares the platform with the Cayenne model. During the production, Touareg replaced three generations, and the last, third generation presented on the market was updated in 2023.

In the Russian market, Touareg was very popular. It is worth recalling that until the spring of 2017, the model was assembled in Kaluga with a large -sized method. Later Volkswagen switched to the import of a crossover from Europe. Official sales in Russia lasted until 2022, when the company froze deliveries. Now the cars of this model fall into the Russian market only through parallel imports.

The Touareg solution is part of the wider optimization of the Volkswagen model range. Earlier it became known that in 2027, the ID.5 electric crossover, produced in 2021, will also come off the assembly line. In addition, the German automaker postponed plans to create an electric minivan that could change the Touran model. The development of such an electric car can now potentially be entrusted to Skoda.
