For the first time in history, KamAZ lost its leadership in Russia at the end of the year

The Autostat agency shared statistics on sales of commercial vehicles for 2024. For the first time in recent history, KamAZ is not in first place among heavy trucks: the Russian plant sold 17.2 thousand vehicles, while the Chinese Sitrak ended the year with 19.4 thousand units. Shacman took third place (15.7 thousand), fourth place went to FAW (11.6 thousand).

KamAZ does not agree with Autostat’s calculations. The plant considers it incorrect that analysts classified vehicles with a gross weight of over 16 tons as heavy trucks. According to KamAZ, this is a European standard, and in Russia and China, large-tonnage trucks include vehicles with a gross weight of 14 tons or more. If we take the methodology of the Russian plant as a basis, then it retained its leadership (20.3 thousand vehicles), ahead of Sitrak by less than 1000 units.

KamAZ also indicated that Autostat keeps records based on registrations with the traffic police, that is, the statistics do not include supplies for law enforcement agencies. The plant drew attention to the difference in production and sales: in 2024, the Russian market for heavy trucks fell by 19%, and the number of trucks produced increased by 10%. The decline in sales was not a surprise for KamAZ.

In 2024, KamAZ’s share in the Russian market was falling, but measures have already been taken: the recycling fee has been raised not only for passenger cars, but also for commercial vehicles. However, the forecast from the auto giant for 2025 is rather pessimistic: KamAZ expects sales of up to 100 thousand trucks, but the result may be less due to the high key rate, problems with loans and leasing.
