A camouflaged prototype was recently spotted on the West Coast, providing a first look at the electric vehicle Ford hopes to disrupt the budget pickup market with. Despite the efforts of the camouflage to hide the outlines, it is already clear: this is not an electric Maverick, and, apparently, the new product may be even more compact. Carscoops reports this.
Underneath the camouflage is the traditional upright profile of a pickup truck, but some details are already visible. The first thing that catches your eye is the strongly raked front end, which reveals a more aerodynamic design than you might expect. Early sketches hinted at a streamlined nose and sloping rear window; the prototype seems to confirm these suspicions.
In real conditions, the pickup truck surprises with its compactness. The video from The Autopian shows the Ford driving next to a full-size electric truck, dwarfed by it. Another telling point: the next Mazda B-Series seemed almost the same in size. And since this Mazda was essentially a remake of the original Ford Ranger, this is a strong hint that the new electric car will be miniature even by modern American standards.
The prototype’s low ground clearance and squat profile reveal its true priorities. Together with aerodynamic wheel covers and, almost certainly, low-rolling resistance tires, it makes it clear that Ford is focused on maximum efficiency, not off-road conquest. So don’t expect this truck to start smashing boulders straight from the factory.
