Honda and Nissan are in talks to merge

Nissan Motor and Honda Motor have begun negotiations to merge, which will result in a new automotive alliance. Rumors about this have been circulating for the last six months, and, according to the Nikkei agency, in the coming weeks the parties will announce the signing of a memorandum of understanding. Mitsubishi Motors, of which Nissan is the largest shareholder, is also expected to join the Nissan-Honda alliance.

The creation of a holding will allow Honda and Nissan to combine efforts in the field of creating electric vehicles and reduce costs – as a result of this, business efficiency and competitiveness will increase. In addition to the joint development of electric cars, Honda and Nissan intend to establish common production of their components, in particular batteries.

If an agreement is reached, the new alliance will become the largest since the creation of the Stellantis concern, as it will include five brands at once – in addition to Nissan, Honda and Mitsubishi, it will include the premium sub-brands Acura and Infiniti.

Nissan and Honda may join forces against China Now official: Mitsubishi will join the Nissan-Honda alliance Chinese BYD has surpassed Honda and Nissan in terms of global sales

Japanese automakers see the main threat from China. Chinese BYD has already surpassed Honda and Nissan in terms of global sales: in the second quarter of this year, it increased sales by 40 percent compared to the same period in 2023, shipping almost a million cars in three months. This allowed him to overtake the Japanese and reach seventh place in sales in the world.

If we compare the sales volumes of electric vehicles for 2023, Nissan and Honda together sold only 160 thousand “battery” cars, while BYD sold 1.57 million.

The creation of an alliance will allow Honda and Nissan to resist the onslaught of Chinese automakers in general and BYD in particular.
