Hyundai Motor received a huge fine for fraud with the classification of spare parts

As reported by ITHome, the company received an order from the office of the second commissioner of customs at the Indian port of Chennai on April 21, 2026.

Indian authorities have accused Hyundai of deliberately tampering with the classification of imported car air purifiers (air filters). According to the investigation, the company deliberately underestimated the duty, registering them at a preferential rate of 7.5%, while the real rate should be higher. As a result of these frauds, the Indian budget lost significant amounts.

According to the court decision, Hyundai India is required to pay almost 73 million rupees (about 87.5 million rubles) as unpaid duty, as well as a similar amount of fine.

In addition, the company will have to pay a “ransom” (additional compensation) in the amount of 74.7 million rupees (about 90 million rubles). Taking into account interest, the exact amount of which has not yet been determined, the total amount of financial sanctions exceeds 220 million rupees (more than 2.2 billion rupees or approximately 1.61 billion rubles at the current exchange rate).

Hyundai India said it was studying the order and considering the possibility of filing an appeal, but emphasized that this decision will not affect the financial and operational activities of the company.
