According to the statistics of Avtostat, in March the Russians bought 79.8 thousand new cars and light commercial cars, which is 45.5 percent less than last month last year. More than 65 percent of sales in early spring accounted for five marks: this is LADA, whose share is 31.53 percent, as well as four Chinese brands – Haval, Cher, Geely and Changan.
If we compare the sales of new cars in March with the previous month, then they increased slightly – by 2.3 percent. The volume of the car market in the first quarter amounted to 246,934 new cars, and this is 25.3 percent less than three months of last year.
The Motor turned to one of the leaders of the March rating, Geely, which takes the fourth line. The brand’s press service said that the cooling of demand is primarily related to the economic situation. “Improving the recycling fee, a decrease in the availability of loans and the persistent high interest rates on bank deposits influenced demand, as a result of which many potential customers postponed the purchase of a car,” the company explained.
There are additional factors. For example, last year, a significant number of cars brought to Russia by parallel imports through individuals and unauthorized legal entities got into Russia sales statistics. There were also changes in the model line: in particular, the popular Coolray and Atlas Pro crossovers were brought under the Belgee brand, which also affected sales statistics for the first quarter of 2025 in comparison with the same period of 2024.

Returning to the general statistics, the leader of the Russian car market, AvtoVAZ, sold 25,167 cars in March (-36.9 percent) and 77,278 pieces per quarter (-15 percent). In second place is HAVAL with the results of 9790 (-39 percent) and 31,185 cars (-17.1 percent), respectively. In third place, the CHERY, which sold 8409 cars in March (-36.1 percent) and 31,893 cars per quarter (-19.2 percent).
The fourth place went to Geely: March Mark completed with 5134 sold cars (-65.8 percent), and in January-March sold 16,452 cars (-54.6 percent). Finally, the five Changan closes – 3787 cars per March and 12,292 per quarter, which corresponds to a fall by 59.4 and 34.3 percent.
