Insurers will have to notify car owners about the expiration of the compulsory motor liability insurance policy 10 days in advance

The head of the Committee on Labor, Social Policy and Veterans Affairs, Yaroslav Nilov, who developed the corresponding amendments, plans to submit the corresponding bill to the State Duma. According to the specialist, the innovation will reduce the risk of drivers who have forgotten about the expiration of their compulsory insurance policy becoming accidental lawbreakers.

In most cases, insurance companies remind car owners in advance about the imminent expiration of the compulsory motor liability insurance policy. However, this does not always happen. In situations where drivers purchase policies on markets, insurers may not track this point. For driving without a motor vehicle insurance policy, a fine of 800 rubles is provided. Moreover, from the beginning of 2025, a sanction in the amount of three to five thousand rubles is provided for a repeated violation.

Traffic cameras have begun to identify drivers without compulsory motor liability insurance. In Russia, the fine for driving without compulsory motor liability insurance will increase several times. According to the amendments, insurance companies will have to inform drivers about the expiration of the compulsory motor liability insurance policy no later than ten days in advance. Depending on the agreement with the policyholder, agents will be able to send a notification by email, SMS message or to the client’s personal account on the State Services portal.

In December last year, traffic cameras began to detect motorists without compulsory motor insurance. At the first stage, violators are informed about the prohibition of movement without a policy using “chain letters”.
