Kia will release the Tasman EV electric pickup truck

The head of marketing for the brand’s South African subsidiary, Christo Valentin, told CarBuzz that an electric variant will join the range. Kia last mentioned electric pickups in March 2022, but such products were not included in the updated 2024 plan. Now it’s obvious: the Tasman EV project was not curtailed despite the slowdown in demand for electric vehicles around the world.

Parent concern Hyundai has promised to invest $12.6 billion in production facilities in the United States: it is expected that these funds will be used to fine-tune the assembly of electric cars and traction batteries for them. Since pickup trucks are popular in North America, and import duties on imported models are high, it will be difficult to compete with Ford, Chevrolet, RAM and Tesla without local assembly.

Australian journalists believe that the electric Kia Tasman EV may be aimed at the US, but such a model will not appear soon: at best in 2027. The development of a “battery” version on a frame platform will be useful for the Telluride SUV. Before the purely electric Kia Tasman, a rechargeable hybrid with a 2.5-liter petrol turbo engine may appear: it is expected in 2025.

The first market for the Kia Tasman will be South Korea: the truck will appear there in the first quarter of 2025. By the second half of the year, the model will reach Australia and South Africa. For now, the frame pickup is available with a 2.2 CRDi turbodiesel (210 horsepower, 441 Nm) or a 2.5 T-GDi petrol turbo engine (281 horsepower, 421 Nm).
