McLaren has banned supercar owners from driving fast by opening the windows

The British brand has announced an unusual recall campaign, as 163 cars may have their rear panels suddenly torn off while they are driving. The defect appears if you accelerate over 154 km/h with the windows open: in this case, the incoming air flow destroys the adhesive connection of the polycarbonate panel, which serves as the rear window.

McLaren 765LT owners have complained to dealers that the rear window is starting to rattle, and for some customers the panel has come off completely. For a long time it was not possible to reproduce the defect, but then it turned out that at some race tracks, for safety reasons, windows are required to be opened slightly during track days, and it was precisely these supercars that elements began to deteriorate.

Regular McLaren 765LT manufactured from August 2020 to May 2021 are at risk: spiders and versions with the MSO package are not included in the recall. The automaker admitted that the defect arose due to the fact that the process of gluing the polycarbonate panel did not meet McLaren standards. Dealers will install special fasteners and also apply an additional layer of glue around the perimeter of the frame.

Until the defect is corrected, McLaren 765LT owners are advised not to drive fast with the windows open, which in some cases amounts to a track day ban. The restrictions are curious, because customers paid from 400 to 500 thousand dollars for the supercar, and the total circulation does not exceed 765 units.
