Mercedes-Benz has returned the monstrous petrol six for the AMG GLC 53

On the eve of the premiere of the updated crossover, information appeared that the company from Affalterbach would gradually abandon the four-cylinder engine on most AMG models. The restyled Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 4Matic+ has an in-line six.

The updated Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 4MATIC+ crossover is available in two body types – regular and coupe. Its main new feature is a significantly modified 3.0-liter twin-supercharged inline-six engine that develops 449 hp. and produces a torque of 600 Nm. In overboost mode, the torque increases to 640 Nm for 10 seconds.

The engineers from Affalterbach used a new cylinder head with optimized passages, a new camshaft and an intercooler. The auxiliary electric compressor now operates almost constantly and develops a power of up to 7.5 kW (versus the previous 5.0 kW), which provides lightning-fast response to the throttle pedal. Paired with the engine is a 9-speed automatic transmission.

For the first time for an AMG crossover, a drift mode in combination with an electronically controlled differential on the rear axle is available in the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package. In this mode, the crossover remains only rear-wheel drive throughout the entire speed range. Acceleration to “hundreds” of the new crossover takes 4.2 seconds, the maximum speed reaches 270 km/h.
