Versions with engines of this configuration will be sold in the USA, China and the Middle East. At the same time, the German manufacturer will be forced to remove V12 cars from the European Union after the tightening of environmental standards and the introduction of the Euro-7 standard.
Rumors have been circulating for a long time, but now the information has been officially confirmed: the V12 6.0 biturbo engine with the factory index M279 will no longer be offered on the markets of the European Union – the reason was the upcoming Euro-7 environmental standard. As Mercedes-Benz explained to Motor1, emission requirements force the vehicle to be abandoned in the European Union itself and in non-EU states that follow their certification standards, as well as in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and India.
“Our main goal is to ensure that all Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-Maybach models meet the highest requirements of our customers. We continually improve our models and engines, regularly reviewing our range for specific markets. We also strictly comply with all applicable standards, including Euro 7. That is why in the European and CoC markets, as well as in some other markets such as India, the updated V8 has become the new top-end engine,” the automaker said in a statement.
However, it is too early to say goodbye to the legendary V12 engine. In Maybach’s key markets – China, the USA and the Middle East – the V12 will remain. Moreover, the name S680 will continue to be used all over the world, although completely different engines will be hidden under it: in some countries – eight-cylinder, in others – twelve-cylinder.
