Motorhome lists 6 reasons for car battery failure

Among the main reasons for battery failure are critical loss of charge during long-term storage and shedding of plates due to vibration. Roman Timashov, Deputy General Director of the Avtodom group of companies, told Motor magazine about this.

“Severe discharge of the battery during long-term storage destroys the plates. The battery stops holding a charge. When the battery is poorly secured and is subjected to impacts, the plates fall off due to vibration,” Timashov said.

According to him, this also includes damage to the body – from rubbing or splitting. Leaked electrolyte can damage paintwork and wiring.

Low temperatures are especially dangerous when it is frosty outside and the battery has a weak charge. The electrolyte inside the battery can simply freeze: the liquid expands, the ice destroys the plates and the case.

After this, the battery can no longer be restored – all that remains is to dispose of it, the expert noted.

Among the malfunctions that disable the battery, the expert also highlighted the breakdown of the generator. Both undercharging and overcharging the battery cause harm: in both cases, the electrolyte boils away and the plates are destroyed.

Another reason is a current leak in the electrical network due to old wiring or poorly installed additional equipment. Another factor is internal defects of the battery itself, namely shedding of the active mass of the plates or a short circuit, the expert emphasized.

The guaranteed battery life is from one to three years, depending on the type and manufacturer. However, under normal use, the batteries operate quietly for 5 to 8 years. It all depends on how it is cared for and the condition of the car’s electrics, Timashov explained.
