Mysterious 1941 Ford Super Deluxe Woody found on USS Yorktown aircraft carrier

NOAA Ocean Exploration researchers have discovered a mysterious 1941 Ford Super Deluxe Woody on the wreck of the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier in the Pacific Ocean. The discovery was made on April 19 last year using the Deep Discoverer submersible at a depth of about 5,200 meters (3.2 miles), Carscoops reports.

USS Yorktown sank in June 1942 during the Battle of Midway after being hit by torpedoes from a Japanese submarine. The aircraft carrier sank along with the car, which ended up in the hangar.

Despite 83 years at the bottom of the ocean, Ford remains recognizable. The footage shows Woody signature features like a split windshield, chrome bumpers and wood door panels, although the wood is almost completely rotted away.

How exactly the mysterious car ended up on the aircraft carrier remains a question. According to the main story, Woody belonged to the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard and was loaded aboard during the repair of Yorktown after the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942. On the front of the car there is a sign with the inscription “SHIP SERVICE ___ NAVY”, which confirms the version that the car belonged to the shipyard.

The carrier was repaired in three days and sent back to sea, probably before anyone could unload the Ford. A few weeks later, Yorktown was torpedoed and sank, taking the mystery car with it.
