Monochrome images of two-door cars converted from a sedan have appeared in the open database of the European Patent Office. Two-tone coupes with a design a la Mercedes-AMG S 63 E Performance and Mercedes-Maybach S 680 can be either a factory project or a small-scale special version from a third-party tuning studio. The patent applications were filed by Robu Aktiengesellschaft.

The man who made Mercedes as we know it has died

Robu Aktiengesellschaft is known for its 2021 low-volume Mercedes-AMG GT R speedster project. Then the production partner was the HWA AG bureau of AMG co-founder Hans-Werner Aufrecht. However, Mercedes-Benz didn’t have its own Mythos line at the time, so S-Class-based coupe projects have different paths to take.

An interesting feature of the two-door with Maybach nameplates is the split rear window. A camouflaged prototype of such a coupe was caught by spy photographers a year ago, which means work is underway on a luxury successor to the Mercedes-Benz CL. However, such a car will definitely not be widespread, because development and certification according to all the rules is unlikely to be economically feasible.

Mercedes-Benz is preparing for austerity

In recent years, Mercedes-Benz got rid of a whole galaxy of two-door cars: the SLC, S-Class Coupe/Convertible, and the “open” AMG GT were retired. At the same time, sales of the Mercedes-AMG SL leave much to be desired: in the most important American market, demand has halved in 2024. There are no prerequisites for the release of a new coupe based on the S-Class, unless it is a very rare and expensive series.
