New details have emerged about the electric Land Rover Defender

In an interview with the British publication Autocar, JLR commercial director Lennard Hornik said that the Defender will only have a fully “green” version in the next generation. This means that you shouldn’t expect an electric SUV in the next five years—the Defender generation change is unlikely to happen before the beginning of the next decade.

According to the top manager, JLR “explored the potential for electrification of the current SUV and identified challenges that may prove insurmountable.” The current generation of Defender is based on the D7x platform, and due to the location of the axles, it is not easy to allocate space for installing a battery with sufficient capacity for an electric car. Moreover, the model is already offered in the electrified version P400e.

However, JLD is not abandoning plans to create an all-electric Defender. This means that with the change of generation, the SUV will move to a new architecture, including an electric car. In the future, the British automaker intends to create electric production models for each of its brands – in addition to Defender, these include Range Rover, Discovery and Jaguar.

At the same time, back in 2022 there were rumors that the electric Defender would debut in 2025. However, this was before the world saw a slowdown in demand for electric cars.

But the classic Def has a “green” version: it was developed by the American company ECD Automotive Design, which specializes in modifications to old Range Rover and Land Rover. The restomod, which debuted in 2023, was based on the five-door Defender 110 of the first generation, which was equipped with a 450-horsepower electric motor and a battery with a capacity of 100 kilowatt-hours.
