Nissan has confirmed its intention to produce a cheap car, but warns that tariffs make this task almost impossible.
The company’s CEO, Ivan Espinosa, said during the presentation of its ambitious revival plan that demand for ultra-affordable cars like the $18,000 Versa (the model was discontinued in the United States in 2025) remains strong.
“I believe there is a market and we still see demand. But the context makes it very difficult. The question is how to get to the right price,” Espinosa said.
The main obstacle is tariffs, which make the production of budget models economically unjustified. However, Nissan continues to explore the possibility of producing a car with a price similar to the modern Kicks.
In addition, the head of the company expressed confidence that sedans are not dead: “I think there is still a place for sedans.”
