Nissan will release a new generation of GT-R by 2030

The Nissan GT-R supercar won’t go all-electric. Contrary to rumors that were actively circulated after the presentation of the Hyper Force concept, the next generation of the supercar will not be electric: the car will receive a hybrid power plant based on the iconic VR38 engine. Senior Vice President of Nissan North America Ponz Pandikoutira spoke about this in an interview with The Drive.

The concept was presented at the New York Auto Show. The top manager confirmed that work on the new generation of supercar is being carried out by engineers of the Japanese company.

“By 2028 we will make concrete announcements, and hopefully before the next decade you will see the GT-R R36,” The Drive quotes him as saying.

The car will receive a new platform, but radical experiments with the power plant are not expected. According to Pandikoutira, the cylinder block of the VR38 engine will remain, but perhaps the combustion chamber, cylinder head, and pistons will be completely different.

The main reason for building a hybrid power plant and abandoning a pure internal combustion engine is Nissan’s desire to make the next-generation R36 supercar a global model. The current R35 does not fit into increasingly stringent environmental standards, including the promising Euro-7 standard. At the same time, Nissan’s top manager rejected the assumption that the GT-R will become a pure electric car.

The VR38 engine has a cast-iron cylinder block, the engine lends itself well to tuning and can withstand power of over 1000 hp. Official power figures for the new generation supercar have not yet been announced. Judging by the given time frame, the car’s debut will take place no earlier than 2030.
