The popular crossover was withdrawn from sales in Europe in 2024 due to non-compliance with new cybersecurity regulations. It was supposed to be completely replaced by a new generation electric model, but Porsche decided to release a gasoline successor for the Macan as well. A crossover based on the Audi Q5 platform will appear in 2028.
Like the original Macan, the new crossover from Zuffenhausen will be closely related to the Audi Q5 in terms of technical content. During a question and answer session following the annual Porsche conference, the CEO of the German company, Michael Leiters, clarified that the process of turning Audi into Porsche is not just a name change.
“We have to make sure it’s a real Porsche. And this requires certain characteristics, product characteristics, technologies that will be new for this model and will be new for all similar cars – so it will take some time to begin industrial production and launch this product,” Motor1 quotes Michael Leiters as saying.
As part of the technology collaboration, Porsche will pay Audi a license fee of €1 billion, but this will cover not only the replacement for the Macan, but also other Porsche and Audi models that the two sister companies will develop together.
