RG: pad operation mode affects brake wear

In recent years, motorists have increasingly complained about rapid wear of brake pads. If previously the kit was enough for 40-50 thousand kilometers, today it often has to be changed after 30 thousand. Nikita Rodionov, technical director of the international franchise network of car service centers Fit Service, told Rossiyskaya Gazeta about this.

“The main reason for accelerated wear is most often not so much the quality of the pads themselves, but the operating mode. It is influenced by a combination of factors such as city driving in traffic jams, frequent acceleration and sudden braking, and start-stop driving,” the expert said.

According to him, frequent sharp braking overheats the pads, causing microcracks and burning – the material wears out faster than normal. And on hilly roads and long descents without engine braking, the load on the brakes increases many times, reducing the life of both pads and discs by almost half.

The choice of spare parts is also important: today there are many cheap, uncertified pads and counterfeits of popular brands on the market. A separate factor is the technical condition of the calipers and guides, the influence of which most drivers underestimate.
