Sales of new cars in Russia can be reduced by a third by the end of the year

The head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Anton Alikhanov said that the agency expects to maintain a decrease in sales within 25-30 percent compared to 2024. At the same time, production plans are adapted to demand: the volume of output in 2025 can be from 700 to 800 thousand cars. The market is also affected by high rates of car loans and customer caution.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia admits that according to the results of 2025, sales of new cars will be reduced by about a third compared to the previous year. The authorities expect that the total fall will not exceed 30 percent, and predict about 1.3 million cars sold. This indicator is much lower than last year, however, according to Anton Alikhanov, it remains realistic against the background of current economic conditions.

The Minister called 700-800 thousand cars the optimal volume of production for this year. Domestic automobile plants are still maintaining the rate of release at the level of 2024, but they are ready to adapt to market requests. Alikhanov considers the growth of pressure on car loans and deposit of purchases by Russians to the main factors of pressure on demand. In the first five months, sales of new cars fell by 28 percent, which the agency explains, among other things, traditionally in low demand in May.

In early June, it became known about a sharp decrease in the interest of Russians in electric cars. According to the Avtostat analytical agency, 786 new electric cars were bought in May 2025 – this is 28 percent less than the same month of last year. Despite the fall, the share of electric vehicles in the market has been preserved at 0.9 percent.
