Sales of new cars in Russia collapsed by a quarter

In the last month of winter, the volume of the Russian car market decreased by 24.9 percent in an annual comparison, to 85.3 thousand pieces, Interfax reports with reference to the data of the Ministry of Industry and Trade. This is the lowest result from May 2023, when less than 80 thousand new cars were sold. However, the February fall was expected – it is due primarily to high car loan rates.

The statistics of the Ministry of Industry and Trade take into account the sales of new cars and light commercial cars. Experts and market participants expected to reduce sales volumes by 20 or more percent, and the main subsidence fell on foreign cars, although the demand for domestic cars was also reduced, but not so significantly.

So, a day earlier, AvtoVAZ reported on the fall of sales in February by four percent compared to the same month of last year – this is much better than the dynamics of the Russian car market as a whole. In the last winter month of 2025, Russians bought 26,716 new Lada. On March 6, sales for sales for February will publish Avtostat on March 6.

Earlier, the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Anton Alikhanov, noted that the department is aware of the risks “associated with macroeconomic factors, primarily with high car loan rates.” If necessary, the regulator is ready to “adapt state support measures.”

From the report of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, it follows that in February 77,296 new cars were sold (-25.2 percent of the same month of 2024 and -12.7 percent to the result of January 2025), 8004 light commercial vehicles (-21.9 and +2 percent, respectively), 5.23 thousand trucks (-47.8 and -1.6 percent) and 812 buses) and 812 buses) (-59.6 and +1.9 percent).

If we talk about the volume of car market in January-February 2025, then it amounted to 193.86 thousand units of vehicles of all types. This is 12.4 percent less than the first two months of 2024. In particular, since the beginning of the year, cars and light commercial cars were sold in the amount of 181,704 pieces (-9.5 percent), including 165,855 cars (-9.5 percent), 15,849 light commercial (-8.4 percent), 10,547 trucks (-39.6 percent) and 1609 buses (-49.4 percent).
