### Chevrolet Impala Z11 (1963 onwards, 57 pieces) of the third -generation “Impala” became famous primarily thanks to the sports SS 409 (Super Sport), which was immortalized by The Beach Boys in the song “409”. But there is another modification. Against her background, “Super Sport” Merck was lost and, pulling his gaze, smoked a large Cuban cigar. This is a formidable drag z11. Under her huge hood, the seven-liter V-shaped “eight” (427 cubic inches) rumbles-created on the basis of the “409th” engine (6.7 liters) by increasing the course of the piston. Plus two carburetors on an aluminum intake manifold and a high compression degree 13.5: 1. In addition, Chevrolet is lightweight, part of the body panels is made of aluminum.
Chevrolet The return of the Z11 motor indicated in most sources – 436 hp (torque – 780 nm). True, it is difficult to believe in this figure, given the crazy dynamics. Chevrolet ### Pontiac Catalina Super Duty “Swiss Cheese” (1961 onwards, 18 pieces) The rarest Fullsize coupe managed to present herself to the fans of the drag-racing that General Motors forbade their divisions participation in races. The V8 Super Duty 421 (6.9 liters, 411 hp) with the marking “non-Streetable” was equipped: they say, on public roads no-no! Contrary to such a wording, the operation of Pontiac was not prohibited from the drains. An interesting detail is drilled holes in the frame for weight saving. Hence the nickname Swiss Cheese (“Swiss cheese”).
Mecum Official power raises questions, taking into account the frantic temperament. Catalina Super Duty is 12.55 seconds to pass ¼ miles, and acceleration to a hundred fits in five seconds. It’s fast!
Mecum ### Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt (1964, 100 pieces) What should be a car named Lightning? Clear business – crazy, brutal and a little frightening. But Thunderbolt is even cooler, and it is simply impossible to evaluate it without emotions and reverent trepidation! If in simple words, then we have Fairlane, into which the seven -liter Fe V8 (427 cubic inch) with two four -chamber Holley carburetors from the huge and heavier Ford Falaxie for Nascar races. The declared 431 hp, as is commonly believed, are strongly underestimated – in reality, a motorcycle with a compression degree of 13.5: 1 generates well for half a hundred horsepower. The gearbox is four -speed mechanical or three -stage automatic.
Ford You can’t just take and throw “427” into a medium-sized model designed for “Small blocks”-the unit pulled a number of modifications. In particular, the suspension has been changed, a self -locking differential was installed, the battery was transferred to the trunk. Radio, heater, wiper on the passenger side, armrest, noise insulation, jack, spare wheel – Thunderbolt is not observed. But there are body -fiber body parts, cannon acceleration and 11.61 seconds per quarter miles.
Ford ### Ford Fairlane 500 R-Code (1966 onwards, 57 pieces) in the next, fifth generation “Fairlain” again found a place for dragging performance. This time, the two-door harder was called Fairlane 500 R-Code and, like Thunderbolt, was equipped with a “427-m” engine (431 hp) but in another specification with its inlet collector and increased to 13.6: 1 degree of compression. Official return, as it is believed, is again strongly underestimated – in reality over 550 hp.
Ford On the Internet there is information that the R-Code passes the quoter for approximately “low” 13 seconds. This information of Street Muscle magazine with reference to the test in July 1966 is sometimes disputed. So, the TopSpeed website believes that Ford would hardly offer a 13-second car for the drag raisers: they would allegedly make fun of it and simply would not buy it.
Ford ### Mercury Comet A/FX (1964 onwards, 50 pieces) The long-disappeared Ford Divine Unit Mercury also showed serious interest in professional drag racing, but tried not to step on the heels of the maternal brand. If Thunderbolt performed in the Super Stock class, then a special Comet compact with the same giant seven -liter V8 and wider rear tires of the thug of rivals in the A/FX category (A/Factory Experimental).

The power depended on the degree of compression: from 11.0: 1, 416 hp, and from 13.5: 1 – 426 hp. Dart with a supermotor burns a quarter of a mile in 12 seconds.
Dodge ### Dodge Coronet A990 (1965 onwards, 101 pieces) someone will call a unique medium-sized Coronet ugly. Indeed, not designers worked here, but racing engineers. The wheelbase of some specimens is significantly changed: both axes are moved forward so that the rear is loading more efficiently at starting. For this feature, the car (as well as the related Plymouth Belvedere A990) nicknamed Funny Car. Subsequently, this name will receive a separate extreme racing class. Another interesting point is connected with the body. In 1965, NHRA (National Hot Rod Association, one of the key organizers of authorized driving competitions in the USA) banned body panels made of fiberglass and other light materials. Then at Chrysler they went to the trick – for the sake of reducing the weight of the “iron”, it was pulled with acid and thus reduced the mass.
Dodge A990 was equipped with a racing version of the legendary Hemi 426 (7.0 liters) engine with semis -sphere combustion chambers. The differences from the Hemi road was in the camshaft with a changed profile of fists, increased to 12.5: 1 degree of compression, steel equivalent graduate collectors. Fords quietly hated cars with Hemi, even forbade their riders to oppose Dodge and Plymouth with a modified base (in the photo standard Coronet A990). The fear of competitors can be understood: an ophenically 431-horsepower Maskar with a quoter for “low” 11 seconds-a difficult target.
Dodge ### Dodge Hemi Dart LO23 (1968 onwards, 80 pieces) “Dart Day of Day” was built from Hurst Performance Hurthtop. The main upgrade is 426 Hemi in the racing version. The gearbox is a four -speed “mechanics” (the main gear ratio is 4.88, the rear bridge is Dana 60) or a three -stage “automatic”. The body is lightweight (the doors are etched with acid, the side glasses are thin), the battery is transferred to the trunk to optimize the weightlifting.
Dodge Dodge Hemi Dart is a bomb on wheels with crazy dynamics. A jerk up to 97 km/h (60 miles/h) – 4.5 seconds, a quarter of a mile swallowed in the range of 10-11 seconds. Due to the specifics of the compartment, it was sold without a guarantee of the manufacturer. But with the clarification that it is not for driving through the streets, but for SuperVised Acceleration Tials (controlled tests of acceleration). Nevertheless, Hemi Dart could well create lawlessness on public roads.
Dodge ### Plymouth Hemi Barracuda B029 (1968 onwards, 72 pieces) “Barracuda” received the “eight” Hemi on a regular basis in 1970-1971, when the third generation was published. The famous unit was also placed on the previous iteration, but only on a limited version for racing in the Super Stock class. By the way, a unique car played a major role in the thriller of the “Highway of Death” – it is strongly recommended to view Petrolheads and fans of old American equipment.
