Stellantis fired German engineers and hired Chinese to develop Opel electric car

According to Carscoops, Opel’s new electric compact crossover, scheduled to launch in 2028, will be built on the Chinese Leapmotor architecture.

Production will be located at a plant in Zaragoza (Spain), where Opel Corsa, Peugeot e-208, Lancia Ypsilon and Leapmotor B10 are already assembled.

The new product will occupy a position in the Opel lineup between Frontera and Grandland, targeting the most competitive C-SUV segment in Europe.

Technically, it will most likely repeat the Leapmotor B10: one electric motor with a power of 215 hp, two batteries to choose from (56.2 and 67.1 kWh), a range of up to 434 km. A range extender version will also be available, providing up to 900 km of range.

At the same time, the Stellantis concern (which includes Opel) laid off 650 Opel engineers. The German company’s contribution to the development of the car will be limited to design (work is carried out by a studio in Rüsselsheim), chassis engineering, lighting technology and seat tuning. The main components – the electric platform and batteries – will be developed by the Chinese.

It was previously reported that Mansory created an “aquarium on wheels” with a turquoise interior from a Mercedes-Benz G-Class.
