Nio has revealed the appearance, some technical characteristics and price of the first-born Firefly brand. We are talking about a small electric hatchback with a retro-style design, two trunks (front – 92 liters, rear – 1250 liters) and an affordable price from 148,800 yuan (equivalent to 2.1 million rubles). In Russia, the Lada Vesta NG Cross in a rich configuration costs comparable prices.
Cars of Chinese millionaires
At the presentation, Nio focused on Firefly’s security. The initial package includes nine airbags (including central front ones) and ADAS driver assistance systems. Also a source of pride is the torsional rigidity of the body at 35,700 Nm/degree: for comparison, the same figure for the Lamborghini Aventador is 32,000 Nm/degree.
Firefly
The Firefly’s body consists of 83.4% high-strength steel, and the prototype crash tested with a five-star C-NCAP rating. A turning radius of 4.7 meters is also known, but Nio will announce other characteristics in April: the debut will probably be timed to coincide with the Shanghai Auto Show. In the second quarter of 2025, the new product will reach Europe, and then appear in Latin America and Southeast Asia.
Nio introduced the first-born budget brand Onvo
In the Nio range, the Firefly brand will occupy a niche above the budget Onvo brand. They plan to sell hatchbacks through Nio showrooms. The competitors are considered to be the basic MINI and Smart models, which are now more expensive in China. It is curious that the design of the Firefly resembled the commercially failed Honda e: perhaps the Chinese electric car will have a different fate.
