Suspicions that the car for sale was restored from ruins should be caused by too new headlights and taillights, perfect paint without chips or abrasions, different years of manufacture on the glass and plastic parts, as well as a vehicle registration certificate (PTS) recently replaced by the traffic police.
“Replacing a paper title with a new one is an indirect sign that insurance could have paid for the car due to total damage. In this case, ownership passes to the insurance company, and it is included in the PTS. A reseller who has restored a car from leftovers and wants to resell it can replace the title in order to hide this fact from the buyer,” Maxim Shelkov, head of the Autocriminalist expert center, told Motor magazine.
The fact that the car was in a serious accident and then restored is also evidenced by the discrepancy between the year of manufacture indicated on the glass, plastic parts, wiring and other parts of the car and the year of manufacture of the car itself, which is indicated in the documents, he added.
For example, a car most often comes from the factory with glass whose year of manufacture coincides with the year of manufacture of the car, and a large scatter in their dating is suspicious, Shelkov said. New headlights and taillights installed on the car should also raise suspicions. If the car is 5-7 years old and there are no chips or scratches on the body, we can assume that the entire body is repainted, Motor’s interlocutor gave examples.
Cars after total accidents, which are bought from insurance companies and repaired for resale, are most often restored with parts from car dismantling yards, and no one thinks about the exact dating of spare parts, the expert pointed out.
