Great Wall Motor (GWM) Chairman Wei Jianjun publicly criticized the Wey sub-brand team at the launch of the new V9X model on April 17, saying he was “extremely dissatisfied” with the marketing campaign.
According to the head of the company, the car is an excellent product in itself, but the team was unable to sell it correctly. Wey marketers, according to Wei Jianjun, do not have the taste and style that the three leading German premium manufacturers have.
He also quoted an automotive executive as saying that “if the marketing team is unable to translate the efforts of engineers into results or profits, it is tantamount to a crime.”
The Chairman of GWM added that the Wey brand is still young and really does not know how to build an image: employees try to talk about everything at once, they have no focus, and they cannot “occupy the minds of customers.”
That same evening, Wey CEO Zhao Yongpo released a statement: “I fully accept the chairman’s criticism. The responsibility lies with me. To put it bluntly, this is my negligence. I will fix the situation – both marketing and service. Judge me by my actions.”
