For a long time, the G-Class remained the only model in its family. Now Mercedes is expanding its lineup by preparing a more affordable compact version of the legendary SUV. Auto Express reports this.
The younger model will be located a step below the full-size G-Class and will have a lower, narrow body and a shorter wheelbase. At the same time, Mercedes expects that thanks to the latest solution, the off-road capabilities of the new product will not be inferior to its “big brother.”
The “little G” is based on a modified version of the new MB.EA platform, which is already used in the CLA electric car. If the electric CLA currently has only one engine, then the new product will have a dual-motor version with all-wheel drive and power up to 349 hp. — it is she who will give an idea of what the compact Gelendvagen is capable of.
The fact that the compact G Class will become an electric car can be judged by the muted radiator grille. However, Mercedes is in no hurry to completely abandon the version with an internal combustion engine – it is still not ruled out. There is no data on the battery capacity yet, but it is obvious that it will be less than that of the older model: the G-580 with EQ technology is equipped with a 116 kWh battery.
