The Pentagon asked Ford and GM to produce rockets instead of crossovers

Carscoops reports with reference to The Wall Street Journal about a possible change in the production program of car factories.

If agreements are reached, the American factories that made the United States the “Arsenal of Democracy” 80 years ago could once again begin producing missiles, ammunition and counter-drone systems. However, unlike in the 1940s, converting from midsize crossovers to military vehicles is a much more difficult task today.

GM is in an advantageous position: the company already has a defense division that produces the ISV infantry vehicle for the US Army based on the Chevrolet Colorado platform. In addition, GM is considered a leading candidate to develop the next generation of Humvee SUVs.

Ford, unlike its competitor, has not played a significant role in military production since World War II, so its potential role in the new Pentagon plans is less obvious.

The talks come amid the Pentagon’s request for a record $1.5 trillion military budget. The main question that now worries experts and, probably, future buyers is whether Detroit will be able to arm America without a significant reduction in the production of civilian cars and without a new round of increases in their prices, which are already hitting consumers’ wallets.
