The revived Itala auto brand will begin producing Chinese GAC crossovers

The legendary Italian car brand Itala, founded in 1903 and ceased to exist in 1934, has unexpectedly returned to the market. Its revival was undertaken by the Italdesign studio (which recently left the Audi structure) by order of DR Automobiles Groupe, Carscoops reports.

The first new product under the resurrected name was the Itala 35 model – a compact crossover, which, according to Carscoops, is a deeply restyled version of the Chinese GAC Trumpchi GS3. The presentation of the car took place at the beginning of the month at the National Automobile Museum in Turin.

Italdesign designers, led by Cristiano Fracchia, completely redesigned all plastic parts: bumpers, hood, trunk lid and spoiler. At the same time, the head optics remained standard (from the GS3), but were integrated into the new corporate style.

The result is a large SEAT-style radiator grille, elongated headlights, recessed door handles, an angular C-pillar and a plastic body kit around the perimeter of the body. The interior features a flat steering wheel, two digital displays, a minimalist gear lever and fabric panel trim.

Under the Italian “clothes” lies the technical stuffing from the donor: a 1.5-liter turbo engine with a power of 170 hp. and a torque of 270 Nm paired with a 7-speed “robot” with two clutches. Acceleration to 100 km/h takes 7.5 seconds, top speed is 190 km/h, and fuel consumption is stated at 6.8 l/100 km in the combined cycle.

Dimensions of Itala 35: length 4410 mm, width 1850 mm, height 1600 mm, wheelbase – 2650 mm. Trunk volume varies from 341 to 1271 liters.

Sales of the new product in Italy will start in September 2026 at a price of € 35,000 (about $ 40,700). There are also plans to release five- and seven-seat Itala 56 and Itala 61 models.
