There are fewer Russians can afford a car

This follows from the report of Rosstat on the basis of a comprehensive observation of living conditions of the population, which is published once every two years. Statistics for 2024 include the average age of cars in the country’s park, the number of families that already have a car, as well as those who cannot afford it. According to the agency, since 2022, the fleet in Russia has grown up for 4.4 years – the average age of cars in the country is 11 and a half years.

Rosstat claims that two years ago the average age of cars in the fleet of the country was 7.1 years, and in 2024 it increased to 11.5 years. At the same time, the share of families that have a car decreased during this period from 49.6 to 49.3 percent. The share of bus owners or minibuses in two years decreased from 0.5 to 0.4 percent. Trucks, as before, are operated in 0.9 percent of households.

There are also statistics on parking lots: in unequipped parking lots in houses or in the yards of the car, 74.5 percent of families against 71.7 percent in 2022 are stored. The share of families that do not have a car due to the lack of funds for its purchase decreased from 50.1 to 47.4 percent. Those who, if desired, can buy a car with their own or borrowed money, also less – 9.2 versus 10.9 percent.

At the beginning of 2025, it was reported that the Russian fleet continues to age rapidly and has already reached a critical mark: more than 70 percent of cars, regularly used on the country’s roads, crossed the ten -year line. Such data were cited by the Association “Russian Automobile Deilers” (Road). For a radical improvement in the situation, it is necessary to double the sales of new cars, but under the current conditions this is unlikely.
