Topspeed named 10 Japanese cars with the most reliable engines

The top includes models from Honda, Toyota, Lexus, Subaru, Mazda and Acura – from affordable second-hand brands to new hybrids for 2026, Topspeed reports.

The 1990 Honda Accord took first place. The fourth generation Accord is a symbol of reliability. Many examples have traveled more than 1.6 million km with routine maintenance. Experts emphasize that caring for a car is as important as its engineering excellence.

In second place is the 2011 Lexus LS 460. Flagship sedan with 4.6-liter V8 (1UR engine). This platform has been in use for almost two decades and remains relevant. If you buy a V8 for reliability, the authors assure, it should be UZ or UR.

Third place went to the 2014 Toyota Camry. This is the seventh generation Camry. The base 2.5-liter four has been Toyota’s mainstay for nearly a decade. For those who needed more power, the V6 from the Lexus ES 350 was offered – without sacrificing reliability.

The 2015 Lexus ES takes fourth place. It is available in two versions: the ES 300h hybrid (2.5 + electric motors, 200 hp) and the ES 350 with a 3.5-liter V6 (268 hp). Built on the Toyota Avalon platform.

In fifth place is the 2015 Honda Accord. One of the most balanced sedans in the class. Engines: 2.4-liter four (185 hp) or 3.5-liter V6 (278 hp). Transmissions: manual, CVT or 6-speed automatic. It is characterized by durability and high residual value.

Sixth place goes to the 2016 Acura TLX. Sports sedan that replaced the TL and TSX. Engines: 2.4 liters (206 hp) with an 8-speed “robot” or 3.5 liter V6 (290 hp) with a 9-speed automatic. The V6 is available with P-AWS or SH-AWD all-wheel drive.

The seventh is the 2022 Toyota Prius Prime. Hybrid with 1.8-liter engine. Up to 40 km. The car runs on electricity for an hour. An ideal choice for those who value low maintenance costs and fuel economy.

In eighth place is the 2024 Mazda3. A stylish sedan with a 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G engine, which has been improved since 2013. Mazda has eliminated most of the childhood diseases and this engine has become their most reliable platform. A turbo version is available on top versions.

The 2024 Subaru Outback took ninth place. Station wagon with all-wheel drive and ground clearance of 22 cm. Engines: 2.5-liter boxer or turbocharged 2.4. Both work with a CVT. The cabin has an 11.6-inch screen and the EyeSight security system.

Rounding out the top ten is the 2026 Toyota Camry. For the first time, Camry is only a hybrid. The 2.5-liter A25 platform is the most reliable hybrid system on the market, according to TopSpeed. The power reserve on one tank is more than 1060 km.
